Signs Your Hemorrhoids Warrant a Doctor’s Visit

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are one of the most common causes of rectal bleeding. It is the swollen veins in the lower part of the rectum and anus. If the walls of the blood vessels stretch thin and the veins budge, it can get irritated, especially during bowel movements. There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal or external. Internal hemorrhoids are located deep inside the rectum and are usually not seen or felt, bleeding may be the only sign. External hemorrhoids form under the skin around the anus and can be more painful due to the nerves it is located around (What Are Hemorrhoids, n.d.).

What are the Symptoms of Hemorrhoids?

Some hemorrhoids may not cause symptoms and many people will not know they have them. However, some symptoms include discomfort, itching, and pain around the anus, blood after bowel movements, or moist pink bumps around the edge of the anus (Hemorrhoid Symptoms and Getting a Diagnosis, n.d.).

How Severe are my Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are common among people between the ages of 45 and 75 years old. Rectal bleeding is a symptom that can be caused by hemorrhoids; however it can also be a symptom of colon polyps, colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, and colorectal cancer. If the symptoms of hemorrhoids linger after home treatments, a visit to the doctor’s office may be recommended. If you are experiencing one of these signs you should set up a visit to the doctor’s office:
• Rectal Bleeding
• Experiencing pain or discomfort
• Persisting problems despite over-the-counter creams or remedies
• Maroon or tarry colored stool
• Dizziness or faintness

Treatments for Hemorrhoids

While some hemorrhoids can be treated at home, some may require surgery. Hemorrhoidectomy is the surgery that removes hemorrhoids. The surgeon will make small cuts around the anus to slice away the hemorrhoids. Since the surgery takes place in a highly sensitive area and may need stitches, it can be tender and painful post-surgery.
