Prevention and Home Treatment of Hemorrhoids

At Home Hemorrhoid Prevention

At Home Hemorrhoid TreatmentHemorrhoids result from additional pressure on the veins in the pelvic and rectal area causing them to swell and at times to push through the tissues of the anal wall. Around 75% of us will deal with hemorrhoids in our lifetime***.

Pressure may be caused by rushing or straining during bowel movements, being overweight or pregnant, or from existing health conditions.

Through the implementation of healthy daily habits, you can work to prevent hemorrhoids. These habit reduce pressure in the pelvic and rectal area and include:

  • eating foods high in fiber to prevent strain during bowel movements
  • drinking plenty of water
  • striving for regularity in bowel movements
  • refraining from rushing bowel movements
  • trying not to sit for long periods
  • exhaling while lifting
  • or sleeping on your side during pregnancy

At Home Treatment

If you have been medically diagnosed with hemorrhoids, there are steps you can take to prevent your hemorrhoids from worsening and to regulate your pain:

  • blotting rather than wiping after defecation
  • using wet wipes, rather than toilet paper
  • taking over the counter pain killers
  • alternating cold and hot compresses
  • or taking warm baths

In exaggerated cases of discomfort patients may try:

  • bed rest
  • wearing loose clothing
  • sitting on a pillow
  • or sleeping on your belly with a pillow under your hips, or if you are pregnant, on your side with a pillow under your hips

Extreme Pain

These suggestions are intended for prevention or treatment of already diagnosed hemorrhoids. If you are experiencing symptoms of hemorrhoids, but have not been diagnosed, or if you have been diagnosed and are experiencing increased pain or struggling to carry on daily tasks, you should schedule a consultation with a hemorrhoid doctor.
