Foods to Avoid to Help Hemorrhoids

Foods to Avoid to Help Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoid TreatmentsHemorrhoids occur when too much strain or pressure is applied to the rectal area, causing the veins to swell and develop into hemorrhoids. This pressure usually occurs while straining during bowel movements, which is often brought on by constipation and an unhealthy diet. While there are many great and healthy choices for preventing and lowering the symptoms of hemorrhoids, there are other foods that should be avoided.

Healthy foods for hemorrhoids

Since hemorrhoids develop with pressure and straining, it is important to maintain a high fiber diet to prevent constipation. Foods with high fiber include vegetables, fruits, and wheat products. Be sure to also drink six to eight glasses of fluid each day.

Foods to avoid

Low fiber
Just as high fiber foods can lower your chances of developing and experiencing the symptoms of hemorrhoids, low fiber foods can increase the level of symptoms associated with the condition. Avoid food products that have been stripped of their fiber while being made, including refined grains. Refined grain products include white bread, white rice, and store-bought cakes, muffins, or cookies. You should instead stick to high fiber and whole grain products, such as whole wheat bread, oatmeal, and brown rice. It is also important to integrate vegetables and fruits into your diet, as they also contain high levels of fiber.

Salted foods
The sodium found in salt can cause a rise in blood pressure, which can cause swelling in the afflicted area. It is best to avoid salty foods to keep the hemorrhoids at a smaller size. Avoid such salty foods like French fries, potato chips, pretzels, popcorn, and peanuts. If there is a high level of salt to be found within the food, it is best avoided.

While it is recommended to drink six to eight glasses of fluids a day to combat hemorrhoid symptoms, alcohol should not be included. Alcohol can lead to dehydration, which in turns leads to more straining during bowel movements and hemorrhoid inflammation. It is best to make water your beverage of choice while dealing with hemorrhoid symptoms.

Food with saturated fats
The blood flow in and around the hemorrhoid area may be decreased by foods with high levels of saturated fats, which are best to avoid, as a lack of blood flow can cause further swelling and inflammation. Foods with saturated fats include such meats as dark-meat chicken, beef, lamb, and pork. Make an effort to avoid saturated fats in an effort to decrease the hemorrhoid symptoms.

There is only so much an individual can do to prevent the symptoms of hemorrhoids once they have developed. While most cases of hemorrhoids are generally not a major problem and go away on their own, some may require surgery by a hemorrhoid specialist.
