5 Mistakes that Cause Hemorrhoids to Flare Up

Although hemorrhoids are a common condition, there are some routine lifestyle habits that can aggravate your hemorrhoids which are important to be aware of:

1. Eating Too Little Fiber

A primary cause of hemorrhoids is a lack of fiber in your diet, which often results in hard stools and constipation, which leads to hemorrhoid irritation. To prevent a flare-up, try getting more fiber through your diet from green vegetables and 100 percent whole grains. Aim to get 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day. Great food sources of fiber include:

  • Legumes, such as split peas, lentils, black beans, lima beans, and baked beans.
  • Whole grains, such as barley, bran flakes, oatmeal, and brown rice.
  • Leafy greens, such as spinach, ros lettuce, romain lettuce, beet greens.
  • Vegetables, such as artichoke, green peas, celery, mushrooms, cauliflower, broccoli, savoy cabbage and Brussels sprouts.
  • Fruits, such as raspberries, pears, apples, oranges and bananas.

2. Drinking Too Little Water

If you are poorly hydrated, constipation is more likely, which is a contributing factor for hemorrhoids. To stay properly hydrated, get in the habit of carrying a high-quality reusable water bottle with you wherever you go. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water and other non-alcoholic liquids every day will help keep your digestive system running smoothly and your stools soft.

3. Sedentary Lifestyle

Sitting for long periods of time puts stress on your backside, resulting in decreased blood flow, which can lead to chronic constipation and aggravate hemorrhoids. If you regularly sit at a desk at work, take breaks from time to time and go for a brisk walk. You can also consider getting an adjustable standing desk and alternate between standing and sitting throughout the day.

4. Lingering on the Toilet

Sitting on an open toilet will cause gravity to put undue stress on hemorrhoid tissue, and your time on the toilet should therefore be minimized (10-15 minutes maximum). People tend to lose track of time when they are checking their phone or reading a magazine and may not realize how much time they are actually spending on the toilet. To be more aware of the time, consider setting a 10-minute timer on your phone and get off the toilet once the timer is up. Or, to prevent distractions altogether, consider leaving your phone and reading materials outside of the bathroom.

5. Chronic Stress

Stress can cause your digestive system to operate at an inefficient and destructive rate, making it harder to have normal bowel movements and contribute to hemorrhoids. Incorporate calming activities into your everyday routine, such as prayer, meditation, yoga or going for a walk.
